I like the first half of the first season. Beyond that it's kinda meh. I like Kirito and Asuna together though.
I kinda liked the beginning too...It wasn't perfct, but it was still cool ...then....they inserted the kind of forced romance and I disliked it....So I stopped watching...I really didn't like how it all started so abruptly and, that ruined everything for me,especially since I wasn't a great fan.

Why some people hate Sao? And why some people hate the canon pairing?
Well, to begin with some people didn't liked it how the story suddenly took a nosedive into romance all of sudden, other people didn't like how Kirito bevame more and more OP with each new arc just because.
In the light novel things happen in a more paced manner, so things look more natural and not rushed
There's also the whole matter of "hype"
SAO was a very hyped series, so a lot of people went into it expecting an amazing series but the truth is that the SAO anime series is middle ground at best, the season 2 with ALO being even worst.
SAO II managed to up it's quality again but it's still a relatively middle ground series

The main problem was that it was very rushed, in the light novel there is a part where romance also becomes the focus, but over there it's better paced

For me, it's the characters and the no actual plot..lol The pairing doesn't bother me..in fact I don't care for it, I just hate how Asuna gets about Kirito, its a bit over board to meWhy some people hate Sao? And why some people hate the canon pairing?

I heard LN is where you get less complaint. Sadly, anime is what the world knows first and foremost, so they will based on that and if they think it sucks, it's because of the anime.
