But, as much as i hate this in a fanfic, i hate hate HATE bad grammar even more. 1 or 2 mistakes are fine by me, but when the whole sentence structure of the story seems to be badly gramaticised..it just turns me off no matter how good the plot is.

To disgrace oneself is something a samurai should never do.

Though that may just be because I dont like Harry Potter.
Also, I hate the use of a mary sue or gary stu.
Are the birds some kind of Communist secret weapon?
No Jordan.
Are the birds under some kind of mind control by Big Bird from sesame street? Will Big Bird turn out to be the murderer? Will that girl turn around and big bird is behind her and she gets stabbed in the face?
No Jordan.
Is this the chickens revenge on Colonel Sanders?
Yes Jordan, this is a movie about an all bird terrorist group, led by big bird, funded by Communists on a mission to kill Colonel Sanders.
Really?
No Jordan.

Gundam and Ranma crossovers as well.
The only fanfic that pulls a crossover well was the Legend of Uzumaki Naruto by General Grievous. Despite the fact it's a weird Warcraft crossover, he makes it seem like it could actually happen.

I have to say some of the best crossover fanfictions tend to come from worlds where they have some similarities that can make them mesh together better. Like martial arts or magic. They also have to be in similar time frames pretty much.
Only crossover I ever did was a one shot involving Buffy and Spike (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Rogue and Gambit from X-men comics. I changed the ending a bit of Buffy, and Rogue and Gambit at the time were living together in California. So I just acted like they lived in the same universe and had a random encounter at a gas station in rural California. No fighting and just a bit of dialogue. It was fun because I ship both couples and wanted to play with how they'd react to each other. I had people ask for a sequel so I figure I pulled it off pretty well.

Oc's are *okay* if they of course doesn't overshadow the real purpose and characters for the series. That just bothers me(especially those damn mary sue's)
crossovers are quite annoying too...
and I guess that is why I hardly ever read anything on ff.net anymore - it makes too little sense. ^^;;

The only crossover I enjoy is the Naruto x Warcraft one by General Grievous. Not only is that good, but his OC are actually believable and pretty damn good.

the author has potential, but he needs to work more on making the story interesting
self inserts don't have to suck, but so many people do them, it's got a pretty bad reputation

There is a fic by an author, I think his name is dave-h, that uses this concept. It's one of those Naruto and Co. discovers fanfcition. Most of those fics also have the same types of problems that make internet fics bad, but dave-h's is really funny and he does it well. It's very much SasuSaku and NaruHina, but it hillarious and worth reading if you want to see a good one of these.
And jtl889, yeah, that usually on the faults of one-shots in that too much crammed or the plot is one that really take place over the course of multiple chapters and gets crammed into one and feels rushed. I actually like one-shots, but more often then not they are not among my favorites simply because the limited space means that the author is limited in what they can do.

I take this from a real fic written by a real person. 'Im not writing another chapter until I get 100 reviews'

You're talking about dave-d, Shriner. He is an excellent fanfic author although he has a tendency to cram some type of otaku knowledge in every fic he writes. Works better in some fics than others.... He's also the reason I got into Naruto fandom to begin with - I enjoyed his Full Metal Panic fics and just followed the links on over. He IS NaruHina (although I honestly believe it's because that's where he feels the canon matchup is, there've been a couple of NaruSaku hints here and there) and I was too for a bit.
Then I evolved some

Super OC's = fail. Obv.
If I'm just surfing ffnet for stuff to read and I don't already recognize the author, you better have a damn good summary to pull me in.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: grammar and spelling are my biggest turn-offs for a fic. Summarize your fic as "Dis iz a fic liek whut!" and you're done. Too many run-on sentences, misspellings, and other things that take away from me getting into the flow of the story? I'll have to click on the back button. I want to enjoy the story, not figure out if Naruto hit the dog, bit the dog, or is the dog.

(For the younger readers, "buying music" was the way we acquired it, since we couldn't just… you know what, let's just get back to the Bowen song. Stupid kids, you ruin everything.)
