But the saying "There is nothing new under the sun" applies to manga too, and the mish-mash of stuff that went into Fairy Tail makes it a whole greater than the sum of its parts. I view the similarities not as rip-offs, but as homages. Some of them are put in there for laughs, and others out of respect for the original creator: "Hey, this really worked in your series, I'm going to use it in mine."
What really distinguishes FT from OP, Slayers, and everything else, is the treatment of the physical guild. This is very much a nod not to manga, but to video games, specifically MMORPGs. Most pirate crews in OP only have twenty or thirty people - the FT guild is over a hundred members strong. It's supposed to be exactly like a WoW guild, or an FFXI linkshell. Slayers only has four main characters, OP only really has 8 that are in the main group. FT has dozens of well-developed characters and we're getting more backstories with each arc.

dont forget SHANKS and GILDARTS

but the only thing i noticed at first that FT did was the artstyle, which looked like OP (now that i look at it they are different)

I guess mangas/animes like to parody each other. In the latest OP episode, Sanji parodied Natsu where he said "I'm all fired up now",in Japanese of course, and fire started to appear on his body.

With flames bursting out from your body. Oh well maybe it's just coincidence.

well thats usually the only time you do say " im all fired up" when flames are present

but maybe your right XD, though sanji has been known to use fire for some of his attacks anyway.

Anguyen: But it's not magic either

Boom: True but whatever the case they still are different terms; different powers from different sources. If it's not called magic by the creator then it isn't magic. what they have in common though is the supernatural effect to defy what is normal or realistic

Anguyen: But it's not magic either

It's got a different name, but it's the same idea. There's different definitions, since it's so widespread in fiction, but basically magic is the idea of "manipulating aspects of reality either by supernatural means or through knowledge of occult laws" (I'm taking that off Wikipedia, but it's generally enough that I think it's an alright source).
Magic, Chakra, Alchemy, Kido, Chi, Devil Fruits, etc, can all really be labelled as magic by the practical definition. Sometimes, like in FMA, it's given a bit of a scientific background, but it's still something that we can't do in our reality.
So yeah, I guess I'd consider weird fruits that give you superpowers as 'magic' to some degree.

it be so cool if you could though :_;
"screw car and house loans- i'll make one by claping my hands!"
kay * silliness* aside- your pretty much right- hell the size of the FMA and HarryPotter crossover section on FF.net is a testament to that.
hell i'm still waiting for "the truth decays" to finish: http://www.fanfictio...he_Truth_Decays.
that said- this is random but do you guys ever wonder why there's so little fanfic for onepiece, but bleach and naruto beat it by miles upon miles? its not even in the top ten =.=

FT has 10% of all humans capable of using magic in a sufficient level to qualify as a mage. (Come of think of it, that's the same percentage as the magical nobles of Zero no Tsukaima.) I don't think ten percent of the characters in One Piece are fruit users, although maybe ten percent of the named pirates are.
As to the lack of OP fanfic, it's because the narrative is so tightly written it's hard to squeeze one in there without breaking canon!

I could be wrong, but I think the romantic subplots play a big part in it. Naruto and Bleach both have pretty big shipping fandoms, while OP, from what I recall, doesn't really push romance all that hard, at least compared to the other two. Bleach doesn't have as big of a focus on romance as Naruto does, but it's still there, to some degree.
But I could be wrong about that. I just feel like most fanfics I've read are oriented towards certain pairings, so I assume shipping plays a certain a role. And I'd say that shipping is probably one of the biggest differences between OP and Naruto/Bleach that could influence fan-fiction.

i concur, the better a story is, the less quality fanfic i find for it- its kinda sad cause then you miss a series and want more- but there just isn't

your probably right on that- i find a lot more angst fics that catch my interest than humorous ones that are actually funny, and much more romance than well described and fluid action in fanfics (there's usually plenty of adventure tho :/). But the angst part might just be coloured by my perception *shrug* who knows.

More like no romance at all just crushes and one sided passions anyways romance isn't that bad the only thing is you'll never please everyone with the pairings is all so moving on I'd like to know how large the big three's fan communities are in any country sp does anyone have any ideas?

i have no idea's about numbers, the only thing i know is that the "big three" idea doesn't exist in japan- a fan once asked oda what he thought of it and he replied "what other two?". =_=;

That's true. My friends went to Japan and told me there wasn't any hype on the "big 3". They have way to much variety in mangas.

That's funny, I took that as him joking when he said that, since One Piece absolutely dominates Naruto and Bleach in sales. So when someone asked him what it felt like to be in the Big 3, he replied, "Big 3? What are the other two?" I thought it was a sort of joke condescension sort of thing, since there's a pretty big gap in sales between OP and Naruto (like 3:1 from what I've read), with Naruto generally holding the #2 slot.
Actually, I might have read that on the link Phantom posted on the first page, LOL.
