It was also refreshing to see aliens as being somewhat even with humans in terms of military combat, it was only their superior tech that basically kicked humanity's butt...kinda like most invasions/colonizations actually.

I saw it and I have to disagree. I felt that the acting was way over the top and laughable at some parts. Plus other things bothered me like the guys having hair styles in old times when the only way to get hair like that is to use gel. Also there was one point where music was playing in the movie and it sounded like something Lady Gaga would put out.

I haven't seen it, but i get a feeling Independence day was much better.

I haven't seen it yet, but a friend of mine and my brother did (separately).

I think both your brother and friend are correct-ish, although for me, I never got into the individual characters except maybe the main character, but the trials and tribulations they faced during the movie was presented well enough for me to connect to them. Insurrection's correct, it has more of a District 9 feel than Independence Day.

Hmm. So, a decent enough movie to go see in theaters, or something so-so that warrants waiting for the DVD?

I saw Battle LA too and I understand what a lot of the reviewers were saying. The movie isn't anything we haven't seen before. Some of it plays out like a bad first person shooter. You have your usually blend of the typical cliche characters. The 'freak out Rookie', the 'Veteran Serge', the 'bada$$ Chick', some well known landmarks destroyed, some cg fire fights and that's about it.
And while I was able to enjoy the film for what it was, there is nothing in it that actually stands out from other alien invasion movies. There are not real well developed characters. No one that really steals the show or grips you in. There are no performances that stand out. Everyone here does just enough to get their character's concept across and that's just about it. And while I do like Aaron Eckhart, this wasn't going to be a breakthrough role for him.

I could see Chris Pine as Kaneda and James McAvoy as Tetsuo. Only problem now is, if they're going to rename the characters just like they tend to do when an Eastern concept falls into Western hands. ^^

I agree with those points, and even though it was rather Twilight-y, for some reason I can't bring myself to dislike it.
