...who wasn't thrilled with how some of the characters other than Naruto, Sakura, Sasuke, and Hinata ended?

While the obvious pair to be discussing here is NaruSaku, I'm kind of surprised how no one seems to be talking about the fates of other ninja. So how about the rest of the crowd, Heaven & Earth?

Maybe this should be broken up into a post for each team, but that might not generate enough posts to make a thread worthwhile.

I confess, I am a ShikaTema fan, have been since their first fight, but I can't say I'm okay with our first jonin of that generation seeming to be a housewife. Admittedly, unlike Ino, Sakura and Hinata, she was not shown to have any practical, non-martial skills like healing or seeing through things, but to be a housewife? Surely there's something she could do, like using her wind skills for power generation or something? With that how-the-heck-did-they-develop-that-fast-in-15-to-20-years city, they would need all the power they could get!

As mentioned in my other thread, I'm good with Choji and Karui as a couple, and I adore their sassy, self-confident daughter. I was never emotionally invested enough to be bothered by Karui being a housewife, and Choji seemed good in the few panels he was given.

I'm also okay with Ino and Sai, since at least Ino is actively trying to teach her kid ninja skills. And Sai ending up with anyone is kind of a triumph for him, having always been so separate from everyone else while in Root. I kind of feel sorry for their kid, stuck between a determined mom and disinterested would-be teammates. I wish him luck. Ino-Shika-Cho rocks, and it would be sad if that ended with their generation. Then again, Team 10 was little better at that age, so who knows?

I'm glad Shikamaru is Naruto's right-hand-man, like he intended.

It was nice Konohamaru, Udon, Moegi, Iruka, and Shizune got panel time. I'm glad Udon got that sinus problem dealt with.

I feel sorry for Tenten's business, but at least she has a career. Plus she got to keep those awesome weapons from the war.

Lee seems happy, carrying on the legacy of Gai with his own disciple. Go, Lee!

I feel really sorry for Gai, though. How is it they could regrow Naruto and Sasuke's hands but not fix Gai? That seems like bull to me.

It was nice to see all the retired Kages alive and kicking, but Mei still whining about not finding a guy was just lame. She couldn't find someone in all that time? It was also nice seeing all of the current Kages and entourages and that everyone was still working together despite all the years since the war.

Hinata seems happy--good for her and her girl--but it really bothers me that there was no hint as to the fate of her clan. Wasn't that supposed to be important to her? Wasn't that supposed to be important to Konoha? For goodness sakes, they nearly went to war with Kumo over byakugan a generation ago! WTH? It's peace so no one is after eyes that can see through walls? Not likely!

Then there's Kiba. I've liked his brash self ever since he laughed when he thought Sakon and Ukon were about to kill him and Akamaru at the end of the Sasuke Rescue Arc. Plus, he has a dog he can talk to, which I think is awesome. Of all the guys, his was the ending I was most peeved about. He seemed to be a bum and was used as a joke. It was not cool that everyone has some amount of success, but all he has is an ancient dog, a puppy, and that cat girl who laughs at him. I have been told he's the least liked Rookie, but that's no excuse to treat him like that.

I was initially thrilled Shino was the first one we saw in 700. Unlike Kiba, he has a job, one that should have some respect and give him attention, but he, too, was used primarily as a joke. Hinata gets her happy, but her teammates get to be jokes? That just stinks.

I was happy Kurenai's girl was an active ninja--Yay, a second active kunoichi from the post-Rookie generations!--and I was somewhat curious about what she was going to be doing with Kakashi and Gai, but Kurenai...? She finally got to jonin; got saddled with a team of genin; got knocked up; quit being a ninja. Seems a sad waste to me.

Kakashi being Kage makes sense. Retiring and handing it over to Naruto works for me. That he's still hale and friends with Gai and Kurenai is also nice. I'm good with how things turned out with him. He's not alone and didn't seem sad. He got to be Kage in his friend's stead.

Sakura...well, I'm sure enough has been said about how she ended up. Dusting? Really? That'll be the last we see of her? Nothing was more disappointing, but that her girl has to grow up with an absentee father...? That's just sad. How is that supposed to be a happy ending for either of them, or even Sasuke, for that matter? Ugh!

Finally, Naruto. He's Hokage like he wanted. Good for him, but it seemed awful Bolt felt the need to lash out at the lack of attention. Sure, they just wanted to tie it back to the beginning of the series, but I thought Naruto was supposed to be breaking cycles! How could a guy who grew up so alone neglect his kid that much? Or is Bolt just that much of a brat? Either way, not nice.

It was a weird and uneven ending for most of them. So, how about the rest of you? Do the other characters merit a bit more discussion? Have I just missed where the discussion is happening? I know I can't be the only one to wonder how tech advanced so far so fast.

In my version of events, Hinata encourages Naruto to confess to Sakura, deciding to place his happiness above her own. Naruto recognizes this and gives Hinata a deep embrace, apologizing for not saying much to her since her confession as well as thanking her for always supporting him. Naruto  then races off to go find Sakura. Hinata tearfully walks away. Kiba having watched the scene from secret, confronts her. He's irritated and demands to know what's so great about Naruto anyway. Wanting to cheer Hinata up, he accidentally confesses to having feelings of his own for Hinata. Hinata calls him out on this and Kiba, being Kiba, decides to go for broke and confess that he's always harbored feelings for Hinata and that if she gives him the chance, he'll be a far better man for her than Naruto ever could. Hinata stops crying and begins to smile. Kiba jumps for joy, sweeps Hinata off her feet and the two head off into the distance.

I didn't like how the ending was handled at all
And there were so much errors in the art too, it was pretty disappointing really.

The 3 things that disappointed me the most
-Naruto's behavior: I understand he matured but I do not pictured him hokage like that, even his smile was strange! Not like his usual trademark smile!

- Sakura's role, I already said in t
a other thread but its pretty underwhelming for one of the strongest female kunoichi in the entire world to be depicted as a housewife in her last manga panels.
Its not even about pairings... If NS happened and Sakura was portrayed like that I would still get bummed.

-Lack of resolution
(cycle of hatred, Bijuus, situation of the Shinobi, Taka, kabuto, orochimaru, yamato...)

Overall the ending felt more like a setup for part 3 and not a conclusion to a 15 years old manga :/

Oh, I like this. I like this very much. That would work for me.

So you thought the art was lacking, too?! I had wondered if it was just me and the hubby who thought that. Sometimes the eyes weren't even placed right, and Naruto just seemed off.

I don't see how anyone who actually likes Sakura could be anything less than pissed about that ending, no matter who she ended up with.

Oh gosh, I forgot how I wasn't thrilled with the lack of biju and Yamato, too. At least we know Bee and Hachibi are still out there.

Yes, the art had such horrible mistakes! Like Shikamaru's appearance switching to his 16 year old self, tsunade's clothes changing front one panel to another, almost everything looked half assed

Oh my gosh...I hadn't noticed the miscolored sleeve/arm for Tsunade (Her arm is wider after her elbow!). I did notice that Kurenai no longer had red eyes, though. She's a minor character AND female--why would they take time to get her right, after all? Grr.

...unbelievable.

Though most of my complaints have specified main characters (plus Hinata), I do have a problem with the ending as a whole. I didn't like how most of the characters were handled.

We don't exactly know what happens to the other characters to really make a conclusion about them. It seems like most of them just got married, with most of the women being miserable.

It seems like the whole cycle of hatred/ ninja system idea was completely forgotten altogether.

I'm also not a big fan of the huge, condensed forest of skyscrapers surrounding the village. All I see is pollution, overcrowding, and urban decay.

I think Kishimoto was trying to say, "Naruto's world became our world!" Ironic, considering our world is far from perfect.

I mostly think that if Jump gave Kishi more pages to work with, we'd have seen their lives in more detail, thus giving us a more satisfying ending.

I mostly think that a series with 700 chapters allows more than enough time and space to give a satisfying ending.

I have said it before, but I'll say it again...everyone got shafted in the end. The only difference being is most of the other characters just dropped off the radar and the author just stopped caring about them altogether. Th sad part is, this was probably the easiest fate and they got off lucky.

Their relevancy got lost when it became all about Hinata now and that she single-handedly destroyed the Naruto universe. Every character was just paired off and left with a fate worse than death....except for maybe Rock Lee who was still doing his thing which was nice.

Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, Sai, Yamato, and Kakashi probably took the greatest hits of them all. What once was the greatest characters now were nothing more than blank slates filling a pairing fantasy. Kakashi went from being a cool awesome guy to a rather stupid person who can't recognize anything even with both eyes open and became nothing more than a Hokage seat warmer. Yamato just disappeared off the face of the earth. Sai was just paired off with Ino for very little reason and never heard from again. Sakura took a massive hit and was just trashed completely...I am so sorry for her the most. Sasuke....Sasuke lost his family AGAIN because now Naruto doesn't give a kitten about him anymore and it is all about Hinata. Naruto...Naruto is not even Naruto anymore....he is some pale disfigured version of himself.

And all of this...just to make NH canon.

The destruction is massive.

Haha. You’re hardly alone. While I think it’s a bit ridiculous to assume that all of the ladies have given up their kunoichi status just because they were shown in domestic settings, I do think that it’s bull that we don’t get to see the other things that they were involved with.

  • For Hinata, I really wanted to see her reform the Hyuga clan and develop a better relationship with her sister.
  • I wanted to see Hanabi on her own team.
  • I wanted to see Sakura doing awesome medical nin stuff.
  • I wanted to see Ino being an information specialist and be good friends with Sakura.
  • I wanted to see Temari being a cool ambassador who gets things done.
  • I wanted to see Tsunade dealing with the effects of her seal.
  • I wanted to see how Karin would grow as a person. Maybe she’d become a freelance Special Jonin or something? (Where in the fresh hell did Team Taka even go anyway?)
  • Where is Sai?

And now that you mention it, it is pretty crap that Sasuke and Naruto get replacement limbs, but Gai doesn’t. =/

I think Kishimoto was trying to put emphasis on The Next Generation, but with all of these still unresolved plot points, I really didn’t care. I will say that I’m a bit biased against kids in fiction because I think the whole “married with kids” thing is an overdone end. (This is why I think it would have been perfect for Sasuke to be single. He seemed completely uninterested in relationships in my opinion.) And if you hamfist “married with kids,” I’ll absolutely despise it.

There is probably a mile long list of other things that I’m dissatisfied with, but I’ve already written several essays (read: embarrassingly long rants) about the topic.

I did promise the most elaborate explanation on why the ending is bad and killed the purpose of the series. And it won't involve pairing.

I didn't hate it per se...Kakashi was one of the few who, at least, temporarily put on his big boy pants. What bothered me about this is that it seemed a cheap excuse to be able to say Naruto is the Seventh. I thought Naruto unworthy for my own reasons, but the manga never established that he wasn't fit at the time or that Tsunade was in a hurry to give it up.

Moreover, the primary reason seems to be for the purpose of fulfilling Obito's wish where Obito himself couldn't. I found Obito to be such an unbearable piece of kitten that watch him get everything (Rin, Hokage even it was vicarious) is vomit inducing. He more than anyone else created that crisis.

I couldn't stand it because of it's connection to Obito.

I never saw it as connected to Obito's dream, to be honest. I've said this several times on this forum, I view Kakashi accepting the position as the culmination of his life story and journey. If Naruto's journey was a journey to acknowledgement, then Kakashi's journey is an inversion. A journey of self-acknowledgement.

Kakashi's whole life was what you could call a lifetime of self-denial. Kakashi had already gained the knowledge, skill, respect and acknowledgement needed to become Hokage. Yet, he kept denying all of those things because of what he perceives himself to be as. By the time he faced Obito, he was able to become his own man and slowly accept that he was above what he previously thought himself as. When Obito gave up the position to him, I felt that it was less about Obito asking him to fulfill his hopes and dreams and more about him telling Kakashi to accept the fact that he is worth more than he thinks he is.

A good way to look at that, especially too since facing Obito again led Kakashi to realize he needs to stop blaming himself for his mistakes and try to look forward to the future, and realize that sometimes, you got to let go of what has happened. It's understandable why Kakashi was how he was since he saw Obito "die", he had to kill Rin when she was forcibly made to be Isobu's Jinchuriki, he lost his sensei, and he failed as a sensei himself, as well as what happened to his dad even if he learned to accept it during the war when he got his Sharingan. So it's understandable his becoming Hokage is him simply coming full circle, even if he thought he was useless without his Sharingan, even if that's not the case, given he was skilled without it.

I'll be fair though, I kinda wished Hagoromo gave him an asspull power-up at the end before he disappeared. With his reasoning along the lines of him needing a power befitting a Kage, since Hagoromo seems to know that he decided to become Hokage.

Hagoromo: "Consider this a congratulatory gift from me."

Considering all things, I feel Kakashi deserved an asspull power-up more than anybody else in the manga.

I also really liked that Kakashi became Hokage because it nicely completed his development from someone who doesn't care about his team (or forces himself not to care) into someone truly capable of caring for the whole village.

What I didn't like was that Tsunade was totally ignored. I wondered if maybe being torn in half did too much of a number on her and she had to retire, but there she is in the freaking epilogue like nothing happened. I love Kakashi, but I am really pissed that his development meant that Tsunade got shafted.
