Well it's being reported that Reactor 4 is on fire again.

http://live.reuters....pan_earthquake2 Reuters is liveblogging if anyone wants to know.

The thing is... the fear and specter of "The Big One" has loomed for a long time now. It's been predicted over and over. Apparently, technology is advanced enough to predict a big Earthquake - over 7 at least - is almost certain in the next twenty or thirty years, but who really knows how much damage it will do? Or when it will even happen?

You're right in the fact that no one can predict EXACTLY when the big when will hit, but most major scientists (so I've been told anyway) agree that it could happen anytime now. The coast of California, much like Japan, is pretty much prepared for Earthquakes, but one close to the magnitude of the one in Japan would be catastrophic, correct preparation or not.

From what is now being said by NHK, there is a high possibility of another hydrogen explosion at Reactor 4 and that the fire inside is not accessible because of the radiation.

Edit: flames are no longer visible, but the situation has tensed. For all intensive purposes Reactor 4 is used to store Spent fuel rods. They are highly radioactive, especially when they catch fire.

http://ecocentric.bl...ive-spent-fuel/

Second Edit: NHK quotes TEPCO: fire extinguished "on its own" after 30 minutes. NISA sees "urgent need" for water

Off everyone possible to pull something like this nihahiga was the last one I expected, but even then its a nice thing he did.

I haven't said this yet but my heart goes to Japan.

CNN REPORTS THAT ALL WORKERS HAVE SUSPENDED OPERATIONS AT THE FUKUSHIMA REACTOR, I REPEAT CNN HAS STARTED REPORTING THAT THE 50 Brave souls that have been trying to stop a meltdown have suspended emergency operations at Fukushima

http://www.cnn.com/2...1...T1&iref=BN1

I'm not sure what is going on with TEPCO, but if they're just rotating teams out it means that the radiation down there is very serious. And if they're abandoning ship it could mean the apocalypse.

You had 50 people working on 6 reactors, each requires 100 people to maintain them, 2 went missing.

If the reactor meltdown climax happens when the wind changes Saturday, the Japanese mainland could be covered in heavy radiation. But if the wind stays the same it will head into the Pacific Ocean. If the wind even pushes in any direction west, it's going to be bad if there's a full meltdown.

We could, COULD have Chernobyl and Three Mile island at one facility because three reactors are having partial meltdowns, the ones that are just now catching fire are out of date and flawed in design to contain spent fuel rods that are not in a safely contained area. Right now we are pass Three Mile Island, but not at Chernobyl. However this is now the worst nuclear disaster since then.

I'm watching the Professor from MIT on CNN right now, his mood just changed rapidly after being told they suspended operations.

Pray for Japan, but also Pray for Japan to remove TEPCO and bring in the big guns, US Military, IAEA, everyone. AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD I HOPE I'M WRONG ABOUT WHAT I SAID ABOVE.

That would mean mass evacuations in nearly the whole country, and even an organized country like Japan wouldn't be able to do it so quickly. This could even mean an disastruous recessession in the whole world if a whole country stopped all of a sudden.

I stand corrected: This IS Japan's BP.

This is unacceptable on the part of the power plants. Designs flawed and out of date...what do you THINK is going to happen when you build power plants on a location prone to earthquakes. This is also very bad news for the PR of pro nuclear advocates. Looks like our energy crisis hasn't quite found a solution yet...

And to think that when I first heard of the earthquakes I tought it was just one of those random casualities that happen in the whole world all the time, it turns now that all can end in the demise of an whole country in an blink of an eye, well all I can do now is wish luck for the folks over there, they really are going to need it now.

UPDATE: the number of deaths caused by the tsunami are officially 3.118 persons, and the numbers are going to raise even more as rescue teams advance in the destroyed territory.

UPDATE: The NY Times's Hiroko Tabuchi reports that a small group of workers remains at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, contrary to what an English translation of the chief cabinet secretary's remarks had implied.

http://thelede.blogs...news-conference

The rest of the workers left for 45 minutes before going back in according to NBC news, Reuters

CNN still reporting on total evacuation

Clarification of my earlier remarks: Jim Walsh on CNN: one of the reactors has no containment vessel, so worse-case scenario is more Chernobyl-like then the others. Chilling

But on the flipside he's an MIT professor in International Security and Nuclear Proliferation.

There are reports that the government cursed out TEPCO in phone calls.

I don't usually do this, but I PRAY that this doesn't reach a worst case scenario, and not just because I'm in CA. There are so many lives at stake, not just in Japan but all the countries touched by the Pacific Ocean.

This was pretty piss poor timing all around. Far as I know, those reactors have been there for close to forty years. They were supposedly at the end of their life cycle. Add big Earthquake and voila. Disaster.

I'm starting to think they may as well pack it in. We hear a lot about how "clean" it is and how it's been given a bad reputation. But stuff like this proves that all it takes is one bad day to ruin the lives of countless people when you're dealing with s*** this dangerous.

Didn't the Japanese government already approve of U.S. aid?

I think so, but this is different I believe because it's for involvement in the Nuclear Plant, remember the Tsunami aid and Earthquake came first.

Kia Asamiya said this one shook things enough he got a bit nervous and was afraid there might be a tsunami. NHK reports no tsunami risk but it might cause some minor water level shifts at the coast.

I'm sure our military is ready to help; actually, I can't imagine anyone seeing what's going on and not wanting to help in some way.

Man, I hope they can get this reactor problem under control soon.

On Friday after the tsunami there was also a fire in one Onagawa reactor- north of Sendai (Fukushima is south of Sendai). Official says fire was put out and no radiation was released there, but considering how things were hidden about Fukushima, I'm wondering if that's true. If it's a Tepco plant I'm definitely doubting it.

That is now the third earthquake since the big one? Not counting after shocks? Or has there been more than that?

Fourth, I think, on a different fault zone, plus one of their volcanoes had a minor eruption- all since Friday. This and the escalating nuclear horror- all on a country that has the land mass of California.
