The biggest issue for anime and manga fans with this new push will be from the access to those less than popular series. One of my favorite mangas of all time, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, has never received an English localization and my only access to reading it has been through scanlations. This affects manga readers more than anime watchers as more top animes get the localizations; many top rated mangas never see the light of day in the U.S. For anime watchers, this could mean the wait for english localizations.

Buying anime direct from Japan carries a much heftier price tag than the U.S. release. The Sakurasou blu-rays from Japan have 3 episodes per disc and each disc runs about $85, while the U.S. is ~$60 for half the series. There is a difference in quality between the releases, but for most folks, it should not be discernable. But if you're buying the direct import, you should have more of a collector's mentality anyway, especially those massive price tags on the box sets (The only box set I will likely splurge on is the Miyazaki one if they ever put tthat together). Even with my income, I don't think I could digest spending $500-$600 for a 24-26 episode series that is only available in Japan.

Even then, I usually prefer the work of a good fansub group. You can nitpick on the word choice or context, but the fact that fansubs take the time to stylize the fonts better, karaoke effects as well as translating addition things such as signs makes some of these groups superior to a number of localizations.

I try to watch streaming anime through legal services, but a disappointment for me thus far.

Netflix: I was browsing the limited anime selection they had. Pretty much every anime they had was subpar video quality, no subtitles during the OP/ED (much less karaoke effects) and the subtitles within the actual episode was that atrocious yellow serif font with the black outlines (Took me back to the 1990's subtitles on VHS).

Amazon: Same issue with the subtitles. There's also putrid video quality. I was taking a look at Clannad and High School of the Dead looked worse than playing some of my PS1 games on the PS3. Other series had episode lists completely out of order.

Hulu: Larger selections but not that many newer titles

Cruncyroll: Simulatenous broadcasts, some niche titles, but the library could be bigger.

Piracy won't stop unless they make the anime and manga less expensive. Besides buying anime is too expensive and really hard to find on certain countries especially the new releases. I wonder if Japan had already taken action regarding in this matter. I hadn't seen any of this sites taken down or any response from hosting sites.

Hm. I dunno about you guys, but my library network is awesome and has a HUGE manga selection. You just have to hop online, request all the volumes you want (and they have like, 3-5 copies of most volumes, and if they don't have it you can request they buy it and they will), and you can check out an entire series in a day. That's how I read most of my manga. Of course, that doesn't help with new releases, but still. Libraries, man. Oh, I also like to check out my anime from libraries, too, assuming it's been released.

Netflix is fantastic for American television, but not so much anime. Also, it can get pretty annoying when it has low quality -_- But yeah, I've spent FAR too many hours on netflix I watching Supernatural, Sherlock, The vampire Diaries, etc but yeah. Anime selection? Not so good. Probably because the people who watch it (the slightly more acceptable American nerds who watch live action shows like Dr. Who and Supernatural) won't be as into anime and so they don't want to invest money into it. Maybe that's not it, I dunno, but it could make sense. As for crunchy roll, I can't do commercials. I just CAN'T. Don't make me!

^Of course you can but the problem is, some of the poor fans, me included, don't have money because it's too expensive. In Crunchyroll, it's free, I think, but I can't access most of the anime because of the country restriction.

The library is completely free. I've never paid one cent for anything I've gotten from the library and I've read Skip Beat, Fruits Basket, Naruto, Vampire Knight, La Corda d'Oro, Ouran High School Host Club, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, Dawn of the Arcana, Fullmetal Alchemist, High School Debut, and I don't know what else. It's quite nice!

All I know is, if Pandora Hearts is touched by this and taken down, right before it's about to end in 2-3 chapters, meaning there'll be a wait of who-knows how many months after it actually ends before the official English release will come out, I'm going to scream the bloodiest scream imaginable.

Just the city libraries. I don't know how it would work where you're from, but in my city, we have like... Four libraries, and they're all part of the same network (which network contains even more libraries from outside the city - probably 10 or so all in the same network?). That means that you can check out and request items from any of the libraries within that network withy the card you have. However, there still is the problem of what Zac said. If you use the libraries for manga, you'll only be able to read through what has been released by the English anime/manga companies, which is generally a few volumes behind the Japanese releases *shrugs* But, it's much better than buying them from bookstores or online.

Hm. Well, maybe I just have a particularly good library system, but my library allows people to suggest items for the library to buy and I don't think they've ever not gotten what we asked for. You could maybe see if you could contact the library and ask if they would buy some manga? They got all the Naruto DVDs because of me :3 And La Corda d'Oro, Skip Beat, FMA:B, I dunno what else... I love my library. It rocks.

I'll check it out...the library system in my state has it's own site (I assume this is nothing unusual), and you can even request books on it without going to the library. But in the past, wet couldn't request that they bought books, only that they borrowed some from other libraries in the system. But I haven't actually used the library since like...I think 2010 was the last time. It's very possible things have been updated since then.
