Well, it's kind of one-sided as of right now.
It's a start though. Plus, we got Hinami already accepting Ayato in the flashback. Ayato seems to be really thinking about her as well as being annoyed of her putting Sasaki above all. Of course, it's not an item yet but it's one of those "let it build" because it has that sense.

Hmm...I don't know how to feel about Ayato and Hinami.
Well, putting my irrational fangirl mode down, to me they are not truly shipping material yet b/c we haven't been shown what Hinami feels towards Ayato (pretty sure it's just platonic feelings). It's just heartwarming though that Hinami was the one to have been able to "defrost" Ayato.
EDIT: I just ship them b/c they are nice to look at aesthetically XD

You could say they have something in bond level. Now, for love, well that's probably something you should let it build if Ishida wishes to do so. Put it this way, when they meet again, it's going to be friendly.

Yeah it's not that I don't like them together, cause they are compatible, I just don't see why everybody is so knee-deep in their own headcanons. 
Like I never even thought of shipping them until everybody pointed out that they were the same age, and then after that I started to see how Ayato cares for her. But I've never seen anything hinting at a "romantic" relationship, or anything more than comrades really. We don't even know how close of friends they are, if they know anything about each other at all.
I think it might really become canon, because AyatoxHinami is a fan favorite. But that's fine by me. I just don't see it as being already developed like everybody else does though.

And then it's obvious that Ayato cares for her a lot, and we've never seen that from him before. Although you can say that he also does care for Touka like that in an albeit more violent way.

I always thought Ayato does care for people, but it has to be ghouls side. Perhaps Hinami made him see in a much better light like put them first over anything else. Like perhaps she can be the one to help Ayato to give human a chance. Like I said, I think Ayato will be part of the faction that Sasaki/Kaneki will soon to have.
