Kaneki's thoughts

He smiled at her gasp when the rain hit her, she was always the brusque type, but even back then, before he had fell off the cliff mentally, when they had spent a copious amount of time together, he had noticed the cute little things about her. Her brief look of surprise whenever he complimented her, followed by a small blush and a scowl, the way she immediately hid behind him and clutched his shirt when she saw a bird that was too close for her liking, the way she curled her hair behind her ear when she was concentrating during one of her study sessions. She had grown much more graceful in his time away, and she had gotten beautiful, really beautiful. Not that she wasn't before, but she was different now. She was angelic in Kaneki's eyes. She probably had a whole bunch of suitors at college, she probably had a boyfriend already, which wouldn't surprise him. It would hurt, maybe a little. A lot. More than a lot. But that was the price to be paid. He had kittened up. And his kitten up had led to being away as the CCG's dog for three years. She was well within her rights to move on, and that was being generous. She might not have felt anything towards him to begin with, maybe he was the only one to feel the way he did. Either way, he wouldn't complain. He'd sit back and watch. He wouldn't interfere, he wouldn't press her, he'd just watch from a distance. He wouldn't go into dating, even if he found a woman he liked, what were the chances that they'd either be a ghoul themselves or would be ok with being with one? And even if they were a ghoul, who's to say that they would actually understand him the way Touka did? Yoshimura had once told him that it wasn't that he didn't have any place to belong, but that he had two worlds to live in, both ghoul and human. But in this department, he was a leper. Dating was definitely a no. Besides, his first attempt at a date had him gutted and dying in some dark alleyway, so no thanks. And if he was perfectly honest, it wouldn't be fair to the other person should he choose to date. It would be unfair of him to date someone knowing full well that they wouldn't be receiving the same level of commitment that they were giving him. He couldn't ask someone to fall in love with him when he had no inclination to do the same. Who would he be kidding? Earlier, he hadn't even thought, he had ran, just ran. And had ended up right in front of her. It was on instinct that he had landed in her arms, after so long apart. No, he definitely wouldn't date anyone, he hadn't even tried and he already knew. It was Touka or nobody. And if that meant him being alone while she had a life of her own, with some guy that she liked, then he would be alone. Simple as that. He chuckled to himself. Hide had really kittened him over when he had first brought his attention to Touka all those years ago in Anteiku. He would definitely thank Hide when they next met.
