#923004 Are You A Naruto Fan Or A NaruSaku Fan

Posted by Lid on 08 October 2016 - 03:39 PM

Now before I start I love NaruSaku but when see people talk about the ending almost every reason its a “bad” can relate back to pairings in someway.

It comes back to the pairings often because they were a major part of the overall story. The pairings led directly into what happened in the epilogue with the characters' off springs.

I love Narusaku but I love Naruto more I love team 7 and there dynamic.

I really did love the NaruSaku pairing and the Naruto story for a while. But by the end of the story, I was already more or less fed up with Naruto and NaruSaku not happening was just the final straw. I was already bored by the war arc, which featured random ninja cannon fodder vs zombies in the middle of nowhere creating a battle with no stakes. Then, having the story go off the rails with a random chakra tree and Madara even turning into the mother of the world and Naruto and Sasuke being the reincarnations or whatever.

Plus, there was the stupid Obito reveal, which felt like a cop out for a villain and he got a lame redemption, from Naruto no less.

On another point, I wish I could share your love for the Team 7 dynamic, and I did at first, but after a while, I couldn't enjoy it. Was it cool seeing the three summon their animals and fight side by side? Sure, it looked cool, but I didn't feel much.

I love it for Naruto and Sasuke bond.

This leads into my next point. Can you describe what Naruto and Sasuke's bond really is? Because I sure as hell can't. They never really seemed to have that much of a friendship or a brotherhood, at least in comparison to what I've seen from other manga and anime out there. Even before Sasuke left they rarely acted like friends. This is a mistake I saw in Kishi's writing earlier in the manga. After the Land of Waves arc, Naruto and Sasuke should have been the best friends ever, having each other's back all the time. It would have made Sasuke leaving and Naruto wanting to get him back more believable.

Instead, Naruto and Sasuke just continued their rivalry, but still seemed to act angry toward each other and then Sasuke leaves. I never found a reason for Naruto to have such a drive to get him back.

700 is not what I wanted but it did not ruin it for me if you tell me you did not have big smile on your face being Naruto as Hokage I call BS.

First of all, it wasn't just 700. I have to include 699 in there because that's where things really crash. Sakura shows no development and reverts to the fangirl she used to be. She doesn't even scold or yell at Sasuke for everything he's done. Sasuke meanwhile just apologizes and never offers very much remorse. Making matters worse, none of the pairings are really resolved.

We don't get to see Naruto have a conversation with Sakura, discussing their feelings and deciding to stay friends. Hell, for that matter we don't see Naruto confess to Hinata, either. I know this is a shonen manga, but if you're a writer, when you introduce something, you should have the sense to resolve it.

And no, I didn't have a smile on my face when I saw Naruto as Hokage, because it wasn't the Naruto I was familiar with. I watched his son rebel against him because his own father doesn't have enough time for him. When I thought of Naruto being Hokage, I pictured a man who could balance his work with his family life. Instead, I see Naruto scold his son and make excuses for why he can't spend more time with his family.

On top of that, Sasuke leaves Sakura to basically raise a child on her own, which is incredibly tough. Then we find out that Sakura is having trouble with house payments and all we see of her in the epilogue was her cleaning. I expected to see her as a strong woman being the lead medic at the hospital and surpassing Tsunade. I absolutely hated what became of Sakura. This promising character who seemed to be on such an uphill climb came crashing down.

I also don’t understand the next gen hate what did Boruto and Sarada do for you to hate them. The Boruto movie is a great movie. So I want to ask you did you read Naruto for NaruSaku or for Naruto.

I never watched the Bolt movie, so I can't comment too much on them. From what I've heard, it's nothing too special. On your second point, I read the series for both. I thought Naruto was a cool story about an underdog in an interesting fantasy setting and enjoyed the dynamic between Naruto and Sakura.

Naruhina happened so what does that mean you cant enjoy Naruto if it does than your not a true fan of NARUTO.

Here's my biggest issue when it comes to NaruHina, there was barely any development on it. And I'm not even going to discuss the Last movie because that came off as damage control.

I made another thread about this, but my point is simple, Kishi should have had more moments of interaction between Naruto and Hinata. If there were a few panels dedicated to the two, for example, Naruto talking to Hinata after Jiraiya died. Or hell, even the two just having ramen together one time and talking, it would have done SO much for that pairing. If the two had more interaction, I could have been fine with a NaruHina ending, but there was hardly anything. That's simply poor writing.

On your last point, even die hard fans can call out flaws. Sometimes you see or read something that you once enjoyed go down a different path, and as a fan, you have more than a right to criticize it.

#922765 The Science Thread

Posted by Lid on 06 October 2016 - 04:27 PM

Hey everyone. If you've paid attention to this section of the forum before you may know I occasionally post stories about science-y stuff that comes out now and then, such as the thread about Jupiter's red spot.

Anyways, I thought it would be nice for the boards to have a thread all about sharing cool things about science.

I wanted to start with a story about one of Saturn's moons having an ocean.

A subsurface ocean lies deep within Saturn's moon Dione, according to new data from the Cassini mission to Saturn. Two other moons of Saturn, Titan and Enceladus, are already known to hide global oceans beneath their icy crusts, but a new study suggests an ocean exists on Dione as well

It's really fascinating that there's an entire ocean beneath the surface of a moon that orbits another planet.

Also, check out this photo gallery of space from NBC News.

It includes pictures such as this gem

And look at this

That's the surface of Mars, another planet.

#922285 One Dozen: Happy 12th Birthday Heaven and Earth

Posted by Lid on 02 October 2016 - 03:17 PM

Checked the News and Announcements page and didn't see a celebration for NaruSaku.com's 12th anniversary, so figured I would make one here.

I haven't been around the full 12 years, I joined in 2006, so I've only been around for 10 years. However, the site still means a lot to me. And to this day, the forum is till going on.

Naruto, the manga, has now finished, but we're still here.

NaruSaku, our favorite pairing, didn't get the outcome we wanted, but we're still here.

Other related series, with new characters such as Bolt, haven't been much better, but we're still here.

Some may have left, whether it be from dropping the series earlier, seeing NaruSaku come to a bad end or just because the manga is over, but many still remain. I think the random thread in this part of the forum is a sign of that.

It's a testament to the solid foundation the owners and operators of H&E built, that there are still discussions from people new and old, of different backgrounds, still visiting this site. Discussing a range of topics from anime to movies to sports and everything in between.

Overall, it's been a good 12 years.

#922276 The moment narusaku died

Posted by Lid on 02 October 2016 - 02:55 PM

So I've thought more about my answer and what bothers me about NS and trying to pinpoint when it died.... And that's just the thing. There isn't a single moment! There is no NS panel, no last connection between them, or last heartbreak. There is literally just nothing.

For me, I guess it would have been at the bitter end, with Sasuke's forehead tap and Hinata in the cemetery. It was just confirmation of the end. But not the death of NS. There just was no end to NS, along with no beginning of NS or no beginning of NH.

I realize the storyline was fleshed out in The Last and the novels, but you know, I don't really count those as canon to the story (the manga) because that Naruto is so vastly different from the original. Same with Sakura, Hinata and all the rest.

I wish i could go back and pinpoint a definitive panel between Naruto and Sakura when their romance was officially over...but there just wasn't one.

(In fact, their last panel together has Naruto thanking Sakura, which is used as 'I love you' throughout the whole manga. So even their last manga scene was an NS mixed message.)

I'm not arguing that NS wasn't canned for NH. It absolutely was. It's just...that all their development, all their mutual feelings were thrown out the window without a second glance. NS didn't end...they just went on like it never happened at all.

Another brilliant post from you tricksie, I agree with everything you said. We can only note that NaruSaku died technically by default, rather than have any sort of real moment where it ends.

While it would have been heartbreaking, seeing closure to their relationship would have been good, but there wasn't any. There was never a panel about Sakura's confession, or about what Naruto told Sai about loving her, or hell even just a talk about them staying friends.

Your second point, which I bolded, is another issue. All of these side projects, the new Bolt series, "The Last," other movies, other shows, in my view, they don't matter. The manga was the bedrock, the manga was the main vehicle for driving the story, the manga was the original source material. More or less, it feels as if the manga failed in telling a complete, well-rounded story at the end and needed a extra material for damage control.

Back to your first point, though, it raises an issue I've had with Naruto ever since it ended. That is that there weren't enough panels giving closure to any of the pairings really. We already discussed NaruSaku, but look at the canon couples.

NaruHina, strictly looking at the manga, Naruto and Hinata never really have a conversation about anything. I made another thread on this topic, that Kishi only portrayed this couple with "big moments," but never with anything simple or subtle. There was never any real interaction on a personal level, about sharing likes and dislikes or anything like that. Heck having a simple scene in the final chapter where Naruto and Hinata go have ramen together after the war would have gone a long way. Instead, it just happens, and that's it. The epilogue doesn't even show Naruto with his wife.

SasuSaku, meanwhile, had some more panels, but as previously stated, everything just happened by default. Neither Sasuke or Sakura had any panels showing growth in their characters, instead Sasuke remained an kitten, Sakura reverted back to a fangirl and the two just had a sort of mutual agreement that they would be a couple.

Looking back, I realize full well that this was a shonen manga and not a romantic one. I get it. However, writing dialogue that advances and explores characters and their relationships isn't foreign to shonen or action oriented series. It's writing 101.

#921708 The moment narusaku died

Posted by Lid on 27 September 2016 - 10:28 PM

Well, I have to admit I started having some doubts about it in the chapters following the whole Land of Iron/Meet up with Sasuke. The fact that Kishi never bothered to write a bit of dialogue between the two never really sat well with me. But at the same time, I kept going with it. I had gotten to a point where I expected Kishi not to have many romantic conversations between characters so I just put it on the back burner and let things develop.

I also understood that it would take time for Naruto and Sakura to actually discuss anything for a while, especially with the war going on. I even kept going with the pairing after Hinata held Naruto's hand, since around the same time we had Naruto's comments about Sakura being somewhat his girlfriend.

So, to this day, I still think that NaruSaku didn't technically "die" until it actually did in the final/epilogue chapters. It remains the reason why I (and many others) found the ending to be a train wreck. Sasuke gives a half-assed apology and Sakura immediately forgives him and even opts to travel with him when he decides to leave.

Meanwhile, we have Naruto end up with Hinata when the last two chapters didn't even show any sort of romantic conversation between the two, heck the epilogue chapter didn't even show Naruto spend time with his wife.

NaruSaku didn't die until the very end. It was an abrupt end to that relationship, an easy start to the SasuSaku relationship and a rushed beginning for the NaruHina one.

#921502 Put a LID on it!

Posted by Lid on 24 September 2016 - 08:25 PM

Afternoon everyone! Hope Saturday is going well across the land of NaruSaku!   Although the landscape certainly has shifted since our ship didn't come in first place, still nice to call this place home to support what could have been.

Anyways, did anyone go to the theater this weekend? I did and saw the Magnificent Seven. Didn't like it as much as the original and it was quite formulaic, but damn was it exciting. Solid action, acting was great and there was fantastic chemistry between the cast. Overall, I gave it a high 3 out of 5, it's certainly worth checking out on the big screen, even at a matinee.

Other than movies, I've continued to watch Shokugeki no Soma and have really liked the most recent episodes. Once again, I'm hoping for more stuff between Soma and Ikumi  :fu:

Oh, and by the way, as you know from a few posts ago, I bought Smash Bros. 64! I have unlocked all the hidden characters and I'm now trying to get the secret stage. Certainly takes a while getting used to the old N64 controls, response time isn't as fast and you can't pick up items while running. Still a classic, fun game, though.

In other news, my two football teams, the Gophers and Vikings are undefeated! I'm writing this just after the Minnesota Golden Gophers defeated Colorado State 31-24. Certainly closer than I would have liked, in fact I was screaming at the TV a few times  :sweatdrop:  A win is a win, thought, and they're undefeated heading into Big Ten conference play.

I also tried a new beer today! It's called Willy Vanilly, a wheat ale brewed by Alpine Beer Company out of San Diego, Cal.

AlpineWillyVanillyLarge-042916_1.jpg?v=1

It pours somewhat foggy and it's a light shade of gold in a glass. It has a very rich and creamy taste with a lot vanilla. Overall, it's a sweet beer and nice to have as a sort of dessert or treat.

Well, that's about it for now. Going to spend the rest of the day chillin, having some brews, listening to music and watching more football.

Till next time.

Hola H&E peoples! How about another blog on this fine Saturday.

As my last blog post stated, I went to a Gophers game, here are some sights

How bout this for a score

IMG_0374_zpslckkhpgc.jpg

Gophers are on a bye week now this Saturday, so just have to enoy the rest of the matchups.

I also assembled my Evangelion figure I bought

IMG_0457_zps3idek270.jpg

I've also had another Oktoberfest recently, this time brewed by Summit in the great city of St. Paul, Minnesota.

summit-oktoberfest-beer-review.preview.j

This one is a beautiful amber and it has a stronger taste than other Oktoberfests I've had. There's a small hint of spice, a bit of a caramel flavor, it's both creamy and rich.

In other news, I saw my favorite movie of 2016 so far yesterday, Hell or High Water. This flick, a modern western, stars Chris Pine, Ben Foster and Jeff Bridges, and they all shine spectacularly. The dialogue is also well done and watching the story unfold is both exciting and suspenseful. Certainly recommend this one.

One more little note, I've been watching the new season of Shokugeki no Soma and wow, do I love this show. It's kind of nice seeing a shonen anime where there aren't as many 'stakes' if you know what I mean. It's not to say that what happens to the characters doesn't matter, but there's no *we need to save the world* or anything like that. In fact, it means that all of the stakes fall back on the characters and their goals, making the story that much more character driven. From what I've heard, this season only has 13 episodes, so I'm HOPING that it gets a third.

Oh, and am I the only one who loves the Soma x Ikumi pairing? I know it's not going to likely happen at the end, but I just enjoy it more than, say, Erina x Soma.

#918678 The 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio

Posted by Lid on 22 August 2016 - 01:40 AM

Well Olympics are all wrapped up, and USA finished ahead in the medal count. here's the final tally:

CqaZv6FWAAAzFre.jpg

I think some of the most memorable moments were Phelps and Bolt of course, as well as Katie Ledecky and the U.S. gymnastics team. Was also great seeing the land of my heritage, Germany haul in some medals too, especially in rowing. Talk about a tough sport! Only disappointing thing was Missy Franklin, hopefully she comes back in 2020 and wins some medals again.

One odd thing was the U.S. basketball team, they had a bunch of close games, but today won by nearly 40. I guess it just took Coach K a while longer to get them fully in sync.

And in case you're wondering what's coming up next time, 2020 is in Tokyo. Here's how the Japanese Prime Minister introduced himself

Warp pipe on to the next Olympics! XD

#918458 Neon Genesis Evangelion

Posted by Lid on 20 August 2016 - 12:33 AM

I love this anime as well.  I used to think he was one of the worst male protagonist EVER but I'm being drawn to him and his struggles now and I'm so close to falling in love with his complicated weak character. He constantly beats himself up and only wants the approval of his father. He's very insecure about himself and thinks of what people think of him too much. Overall his character has WAY too many problems that's why I find his pairing with Asuka so good even though she has her problems too. He's an introvert and she's an extrovert hence they balance each other evenly and it gives them a great dynamic. She pulls him out of his depression or self-doubt and he keeps her grounded from being to over confident or cocky. I never realized the detail put into the pairing now that i'm watching it over again.

One of the episodes mentions that Shinji has what's called the hedgehog's dilemma, he wants to be close to people but keeps his guard up to prevent himself from getting hurt. I find this to actually be similar to Asuka's character, too. The difference is, Shinji beats himself up and closes himself off to protect himself and Asuka goes more on the offensive.

That's what I enjoy so much about the two halves of the series. The first half, with the 'monster of the week' format, builds up Shinji's confidence and breaks down Asuka's colder exterior. Then when all hell breaks loose in the second half, it puts the characters through the ringer and that 'hedgehog's dilemma, along with other displays of mental illness, come back 10 fold.

It's one of the reasons why I enjoy Shinji's character, his journey and also why I find the finale of the movie End of Evangelion rather uplifting.

#908583 Kishimoto's big moments when writing NaruHina

Posted by Lid on 22 April 2016 - 04:05 AM

OK, I think we're getting off track here a bit.

Everyone keeps bringing up other shonen series, but the fact is it doesn't matter what genre it is. Having characters interact, regardless of genre, and regardless if it's romantic or just friendship, is absolutely key in developing any relationship.

Honestly, it's writing 101. I watch a lot of movies being a critic, and one constant thing I see, even in mediocre movies, is moments of interaction, dialogue, the characters getting to know each other, so there can actually be some chemistry that the audience can see. This is true for anime, too.

It ties back into my first post in the thread. Moments like this weren't seen as much through the Naruto series between the protagonist and Hinata. Every sequence between the two seemed to come at very grandiose events. We never got to see them simply interact, have a discussion, find some common ground.

And doing something like that isn't complicated, either. It's not hard to follow. It also wouldn't take up that much time, a chapter here, a chapter there. It could have been done.

I think if the writing had allowed for some scenes like this, myself and I think many other NaruSaku fans would have still been disappointed, but we would have at least been willing to accept in a way that NaruHina has some development without relying on big, climactic moments.
